WW2 was still in doubt. The Allied had just come ashore in Normandy, but were bottles up. However, on the Eastern Front the news was all good, but Americans didn't know much about it. This issue of LIFE was a BIG introduction for many Americans to the Eastern Front and the Soviet Army. Stalin probably came close to having General Zhukov shot due to all the US PR he was getting.
