Germany. Luftwaffe M40 D/D Helmet
Germany. Luftwaffe M40 D/D Helmet
A well-preserved Luftwaffe double decay M40 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains the vast majority of its original dark blue-grey paint. Directly below the right vent is a decal consisting of a the Wehrmacht tricolor shield. Beneath the left vent is the Luftwaffe eagle decal. The rim is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge around the skirt. An aluminum ring surrounds the interior, fixed in place with the shell rivets (one is missing), and accommodates an original brown leather liner which culminates in eight fingers. The liner drawstring has been lost to time along with the chinstrap The left side of the skirt has a weak stamped code of “Q64”, indicating manufacture by F.W. Quist, Esslingen, with a shell size of “64”. Also stamped onto the back of the skirt is a lot code of “DN173”. A few scratches with a small amount of paint lose and negligible oxidation. Overall an Excellent ++ helmet.
